So What if I Like to Rock?

Lately I have really begun to notice how much musicians look down on hard rock and metal music.  It’s funny to me.  You mention a band that is considered hard rock, or metal, and musicians kind of smirk and act like it’s not REALLY “music”.  Like some how, because you prefer big distorted guitars and strong powerful singers, you are somehow less of a musician.

If you know me, you know that I love heavy music.  I love guitarists that can play at the speed of light and singers that can hit notes only dogs can hear.  I’m not a huge fan of heavy bands that just scream and chug along on their Drop B guitars (although there are a few I enjoy).  There has to be musicality for me.  That’s just the thing!  I even listen to bands that have crazy amounts of musical talent and still “musicians” make fun of them and “shredders” (guitarists that play really fast lead guitar).

I like a variety of music.  I enjoy the Avett Brothers, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Norah Jones, Over the Rhine, Lincoln Brewster, Lecrae, Tedashii.  I also enjoy bands like Alter Bridge, Live, Sevendust, Chris Cornell, Pantera, Metallica etc.

So what gives a person, or “musician” the right to tell you something isn’t “music”, or to look down on you because you listen to “heavy” music?  Is it that it isn’t really music?  Is it that there is no way they could play guitar/sing like that? Is it that hard rock/metal doesn’t often use a Db13b9 chord (or whatever)?

What do you think?

**I used to do this a LOT.  Look down on people for the type of music they listen to.  I was referred to as a music “nazi” in high school and college.  I think I’m getting over this.
