I love it when song writers are totally honest about their feelings, beliefs, struggles etc. The latest Alter Bridge album “ABIII” is just that, brutally honest. Myles Kennedy (vocals/guitar) and Mark Tremonti (guitar) both have openly discussed that this album is very much Kennedy struggling with God.
I think this song does a good job of talking about what Jesus must be thinking as he’s watching each of us on a daily basis. As he watches each of us continually deny Him and turn our backs on Him while He continually reaches out to us. Listen to the song…I’ve added the lyrics below.
Alter Bridge – Still Remains
I cast a line when I saw you were drowning
Still you turned your back on me
Pulled you from the fire when you were burning
Still you never could believe
So carry on, if you must go your way
Though it breaks my heart
Your free will still remains
I saved you from the fall when you were slipping
Still you broke from me to run
So how can you justify the life your living
So carry on, if you must go your way
Though it breaks my heart
Your free will still remains
You’ll deny it all
You’ll deny me once again
But I’ve seen it all
I know you’ll come to crawl
Back to me before the end
You must carry on, if you must go your way
Though it breaks my heart
Your free will still remains
I love these lyrics because it shows that no matter how many times we deny Jesus, He will continue to reach out to us. No matter how much He desires a relationship with us, and it breaks His heart when we deny Him, our “free will still remains”…it is always going to be our decision. All that being said, Jesus knows that in the end we will see that He is “the way, the truth, the life” and we will come crawling back to Him.
“9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” ~Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV)
